To become a special education teacher, one must complete a bachelor's degree in education, a state teacher certification program and specialized training in special education. Additionally, some states require a master's degree in special education. Special education teachers must have good communication skills, patience and a strong understanding of the specific disabilities they will teach. They must also be familiar with the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and other applicable laws. Lastly, special education teachers must be able to assess student progress and provide feedback to parents and other teachers.
